Why do I need to pay for the waste this year?
Commissioning of the flu service is under either NHS England National Advanced Flu Service or NHS England London Region Flu and Pneumococcal Service. The obligation for the safe disposal of clinical waste (sharps and potentially infectious soft waste) generated through the delivery of the service now sits with the producer. The disposal of this waste type was previously conducted under the wider NHS England waste contracts.
Why can a sharps container only be used for 3 months?
The Safe Management of Healthcare Waste (version 2.0) document provides guidance on sharps waste and disposal. The key point is to prevent the spread of infectious properties while optimising the capacity of the container. To manage risk appropriately it is advised that sharps containers ate not used for more than 3 months.
Why can I only fill the container 3/4 full?
Over filling a sharps container can prevent the aperture from locking. There is also a risk of sharps protruding from the aperture which could result in a needle stick injury. Only filling to 3/4 full reduces the risks to you, patients and the disposal agent.
Why do I need an HWCN (Hazardous Waste Consignment Note)?
Sharps waste are classified as hazardous. For every collection of hazardous waste a HWCN is required by law to demonstrate the safe and acceptable transfer waste.
